What is a school lockdown?

A lockdown is a security response designed to help protect pupils and staff when remaining within a building or secured area may be safer than evacuating.

The exact response depends on the nature of the incident and the school’s individual security plan.

The Department for Education’s school and college security guidance was updated on 3 July 2026, adding further information around risk assessments, preventative measures and visitors. The guidance says schools and colleges should have a policy and plan for managing and responding to security-related incidents.

A lockdown system is only one part of preparedness

Installing technology doesn’t automatically make a school prepared.

Schools need to consider how that technology works alongside people and procedures.

Staff need a clear and reliable method of raising an alert.

How will people know what the alert means?

A lockdown alert needs to be clearly distinguishable and supported by established procedures and training.

What happens to access points?

Schools should understand how entrances, exits and access-controlled doors fit within their security response.

How does CCTV support the response?

Video surveillance can provide visibility of what’s happening around a site and support informed decision-making.

Security without creating fear

Perhaps one of the biggest challenges in school security is getting the balance right.

Schools should remain welcoming environments for pupils, parents and staff.

Security therefore needs to be proportionate, considered and integrated into the school environment rather than creating an unnecessarily intimidating atmosphere.
